Practice At Home: The Art of Written Communication

Although not quite so simple - school is for learning, teachers are for teaching, and parents are the glue that brings education and real life experience together. It is your job as a parent to reinforce what your child is learning at school and help them expand that knowledge into real world skills.

It may sound familiar… your child argues, “when will I ever use this in real life?”. Sometimes it may be difficult for you to come up with a realistic example depending on the subject matter, but something that will never cease to exist - the art of communication. Whether it be verbal, non-verbal, or written - communication will always be a staple of not only curriculum, but every day life.

So if you’re looking for a fun way to connect with your child during their studies, here’s an idea: design a letter writing activity for your child at home. It is the perfect opportunity to take education and real life and put them together while spending quality time with one another. It’s a parents ultimate dream!

In this day and age, handwriting seems to be on it’s way out and electronically composed everything has taken its place - so, go back to the basics and make this activity old school by having your child create handwritten letters. Discuss the conventions of letter writing and concepts like audience and tone.

A few ideas for this assignment:
  • - A letter about a favorite memory to a pen pal
  • - A letter about an important issue they want to address to a family member
  • - A formal letter to a government official or organization
  • - A letter regarding the storyline of a fictional character they are reading about in school

There are endless ideas that will spark imagination, help with legibility and literacy, as well as communication. To make it more fun for your child - supply them with their very own personalized stationery so they can feel more legitimate and have more fun with the activity. Having them send out simple thank you cards to family members, teachers, and friends is another great activity to try. Have fun with it and get creative!
