VOCABULARY LOG:  10/24/14

1.Oxymoron (literary term): combination of contradictory words (ex. = jumbo shrimp; same difference)

2. Allusion (literary term): a reference to a person, event or thing in literature

3. Pun (literary term): a play on words, usually for comedic effect (ex. – A horse is a stable animal.)

4.  Aside (literary term): a remark or passage by a character in a play that is intended to be heard by the audience but unheard by the other characters in the play.

5.  inquire (v.): ask for information from someone (syn. = investigate; ask)

6.  prithee: used to convey a polite request (syn. = “Please.”)

7.  privy (adj.): made participant in a secret (syn. = informed of; “in the know”)

8.  misogynist (n.): a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women (syn. = chauvinist; sexist)

9.  beckons (v.): make a gesture with the hand, arm, or head to encourage someone to come nearer or follow (syn. = wave; signal)

10.  importuned (v.): insistently begged  (syn. = plead)
