Bonjour,
It’s now the second quarter of school. Boy, how time flies! No matter how we did first quarter, we can all start fresh this quarter. In order to succeed this quarter, and the rest of the year, it is important that all students come prepared for class. This means that each child has a French folder, a notebook, at least 2 things to write with, and completed homework when it is due. Unfortunately, missing assignments can impact a student’s grade as it prevents them from demonstrating what they know or what they need help with.
If a student would like extra help I offer tutoring on Mondays after school from 3:30-4:15pm. Please email me ahead of time if your child will be joining us so I know you know where your child is and I can let the administration know who is in the building. I offer tutoring free of charge and appreciate that you pick your child up on time at 4:15.
Here is what we will be working on this quarter:
Kindergarten: We will continue to work on our mastery of the French alphabet counting up to 20, and being able to talk about our age and names and those of others. We’ll also be going over body parts and colors.
1st grade: We are finishing up on colors. We’ll soon start to learn about farm animals and their cries. Towards the end of the quarter we’ll start learning about fruits and vegetables. A helpful website to help your child review what we’re working on in class is www.quizlet.com. Search MKorpalski1 and choose the topic we’re studying. There are online flashcards and a variety of different review activities.
2nd grade: We are finishing up on colors. We’ll soon start to learn about farm animals and their cries. Towards the end of the quarter we’ll start learning about fruits and vegetables. A helpful website to help your child review what we’re working on in class is www.quizlet.com. Search MKorpalski1 and choose the topic we’re studying. There are online flashcards and a variety of different review activities. Second grade students also use the Middlebury Interactive Language Program once a week. They can also work on this at home. The website is www.pglms.com and the login and password is the student ID #.
3rd grade: This quarter we will be completing the final two lessons in our ZigZag textbook. We will be learning the subjects we study in school, time structures like morning and after-noon, and the words for a few basic school supplies. A helpful website to help your child review what we’re working on in class is www.quizlet.com. Search MKorpalski1 and choose the topic we’re studying. There are online flashcards and a variety of different review activities. Third grade students use the Middlebury Interactive Language Program once a week. They can also work on this at home. The website is www.pglms.com and the login and password is the student ID #.
4th grade: This quarter we will be completing the final two lessons in our ZigZag textbook. We will be learning the subjects we study in school, time structures like morning and after-noon, and the words for a few basic school supplies. 5th grade: We are currently working on discussing where people are from and their nationalities. We’ll then move onto some terms to talk about people, then possessive, physical and personality adjectives and finally family members. We use technology quite often in fifth grade, using websites such as edmodo, quizlet, and of course our Middlebury Interactive Language program (pglms).
6th grade: We are starting this quarter off with a new unit. We will be learning about how to describe people using adjectives to talk about a person’s physical appearance and their personality traits. We’ll learn how to conjugate the verb être (to be). Towards the end of the quarter we’ll begin to learn about family members. Throughout this year and next we’ll continue to build our partnership with the Alberto Giacometti Middle School in Paris by exchanging videos, letters, emails and videoconferencing. Our ultimate goal is to host the French students here in Chicago and to send our students to Paris. More information will be coming soon, but start thinking about this partnership and what we can learn from it. Students are also using a great deal of technology in the French classroom by using handheld video cameras, webcams, and websites such as edmodo, quizlet, and the Middlebury Interactive Language program (pglms).

Students will create a brief Prezi presentation on a famous French person buried at Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Soon we will be learning about how to describe people using adjectives to talk about a person’s physical appearance and their personality traits. We’ll learn how to conjugate the verb être (to be). Towards the end of the quarter we’ll begin to learn about family members. Throughout this year and next we’ll continue to build our partnership with the Alberto Giacometti Middle School in Paris by exchanging videos, letters, emails and videoconferencing. Our ultimate goal is to host the French students here in Chicago and to send our students to Paris. More information will be coming soon, but start thinking about this partnership and what we can learn from it. Students are also using a great deal of technology in the French classroom by using handheld video cameras, webcams, and websites such as edmodo, quizlet, and the Middlebury Interactive Language program (pglms).
