Dear First Grade Families,

Our first week of first grade was fabulous.  We had a fun week getting to know each other and figuring out the first grade routines.  We started our year reading Chicka Chicka, Boom Boom and have moved on to Chicka Chicka, 1,2,3! The students have enjoyed participating in the reading.  We have also started reading a class D.E.A.R. book, Ramona the Pest.  The children find Ramona to be silly Kindergartener similar to Junie B Jones.  This week we also celebrated Jadon’s birthday and had some wonderful cupcakes.

We are working on sitting like STARS (sitting up, tracking the speaker, asking and answering questions, respect and smiling).  Our tables have been working hard to earn pennies.  The students have filled their buckets every day.  We read David Goes to School to help us create our classroom rules.  The students enjoyed the book and all the trouble David gets into.  They made good connections between David and our classroom.

We have been working on our counting and our addition during Math and Calendar.  The students have loved doing Calendar with Mrs. Lyle.  They each take pride in the jobs they are given and walk to the board with excitement.  Mrs. Lyle has been practicing the Sign of the Cross with the students during Religion and all the first graders are working on their best prayer postures.  Fr. John came in today to bless the class and they children were excited and respectful.

Next week we will dive into reading and math.  Please make sure you student brings their work books with them on Tuesday if they haven’t already.  We will start our specials next week.  PE will be on Mondays (2:20-2:40) and Tuesdays (10-11).   On these two days your child should be in their PE uniform all day.  This should include shorts, light blue shirt and white sneakers.  Please check the handbook to clarify.   I will email you the link to our class schedule so you will know what first grade is up to during the day.

Our classroom is very hot.  We are keeping it a cool as possible and trying to keep the kids moving as much as possible.  We have reminded the children to let us know if they don’t feel well but we encourage you to send a water bottle with them to keep in the classroom.   First grade is ready for fall weather and change of the seasons.  We have prepared with an acorn song, making acorns and a fall apple tree with falling apples.  We will continue to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall.

Please feel free to email us with questions and don’t forget to respond to this email so we know email addresses are correct.

Enjoy your long weekend with your children.

Sincerely,

Ms. Tynan and Mrs. Lyle
