Explain why reading and writing need to be connected in instructional contexts. Give specific examples of how this can occur in the content area that you plan to teach

I feel that reading and writing need to be included in all instructional contexts because it is something that we need in life. No matter what career a student chooses, they will have to read and write. Reading and writing is a part of our everyday lives, reading and writing are connected in such as way that students may not realize. Reading affects writing and writing affects reading. In order to learn, no matter the context, we must read. Reading is the key and the success to learning. When you are teaching science, it is fantastic and recommend that the students are taught through a hands on approach, but at some point, students will need to reinforce and elaborate on what they are learning, and this will be done by reading up some more on the topic. Imagine that you are learning about plants and how they grow, sure you can set up a garden in your classroom and tell students about how plants grow, but if a child wants to learn more about the process such as photosynthesis or what not, they will have to read up on the information.

I believe that reading and writing go hand in hand. In order to be able to write you need to be able to use information that you had read at one point. Everything you do in life revolves around reading and writing. All subjects have reading and writing within. You constantly read and write in every subject including when doing homework. I agree with everything Karina stated and as you can see we agree on that reading and writing go hand in hand.

Reading and writing are two completely different skill sets but they do go hand and hand. Reading and writing are skills we use on a daily basis. Reading can support writing skills and writing can support reading skills. Its important to get students engaged in reading as well as writing. One of the lessons that was presented was on the different types of writer's intent. Brittany did an excellent job infusing reading with writing and even included technology. The students would be able to work on their reading skills when given a passage to read on the types of writer's intent while learning skills needed in writing. I think this is a great way to incorporate both into a lesson. Other reading strategies include writing like reading response journals. After you have read something, you can write what you got out of the reading. This is a great way to use both in a lesson.

I should read the other posts before I make my own comments. I said a lot of the same thinga as Karina and Denise. Reading and writing really do go hand in hand and are a part of our daily lives. As teachers, we should use that to our advantage when it comes to helping our students sharpen these skills. Nice posts, Ladies.

Reading and writing are used everywhere at all times of your life. If there is a class where there is no reading or writing, the teacher is not there. All classes can implement reading and writing including math. Many students do not realize that they need to read in order to do math. When students learn they continue learning by reading more on the material topic. Remember as a teacher to allow students to be creative in their writing and find reading samples that will interest students, this will motivate them to continue writing and reading without feeling obligated.

It goes without saying, but I will say it. Reading and writing are essential parts of our students education. In order to begin, continue, and complete a lesson students must read. Even in a math class students must read the directions to understand the task. And what about those horrible word problems? Those are popping up in math texts at an earlier age every year. If a student has not had reading and writing incorporated in all content areas from the beginning we can not expect them to succeed. Just as one of the other ladies mentioned earlier, at some point a student has to be able to elaborate on what they have learned, even in this time of project based classrooms. Eventually students will have to read information (text or trades books, internet, etc.) and produce some type of written work that demonstrates their understanding. This is why book reading and writing must be taught in all content areas.

Julianne....I agree with you that if we are using reading and writing in all content areas it can make the lessons more fun. I learned that through the creation of our recent thematic unit. I used roller coasters as a way to get students excited about writing a comparative essay. The students would have the opportunity to read about their favorite coaster and then try to convince the rest of the class through their essay why it is the best. If teachers did this in the majority of their classes I think that not only would reading and writing be more fun but so would the content areas.
