Dear Parents,

In this time of schooling from home, we have a great resource available for music. Musicplayonline.com has been a big part of my teaching in class, and many of the songs we sing and the recorder work that we do comes from that website. It has always been available for students to access at home, but I think they have made more activities available to students at this time. I will be posting specific suggestions by grade level or in grade level groupings. The good news is that students are already fairly familiar with this website and even have their favourite activities on it.

For Grades 4 and 5, I will be making use of the seesaw platform so that they can work on Recorder Karate and upload videos of their playing for assessment. Those families will receive more instructions - of course, if simply taking a video and emailing it works and that is simpler, then that will also be fine.

Music is a great consolation and occupation in time of isolation, and beautiful music has the power to lift our spirits. Setting your radio to Classic 107.1 would be not only great music education for your children but would probably also have a very positive impact on everyone’s spirits.

God bless you all at this time.

I am writing to let you know about a great singing opportunity from the Winnipeg Arts Council. The event, called Mass Appeal, is “a free concert series performed for the public, BY the public.” It is fully open for participation by anyone who wishes. Music is available ahead of time online, and participants practice for one hour right before the concert occurs.

The choral event is happening on Thursday, September 21 at the Manitoba Legislature. Rehearsal is at 6:00-7:00 and the concert is from 7:30-800. I will be attending and participating in this event, and I would be happy to see you there too! It is a great opportunity to enjoy being part of great music. If a group of students are interested in attending, I can have a few lunch hour practices over the next two weeks to help prepare them. One of the pieces being performed is “One Voice”, which I taught to the whole school two or three years ago!

Please note that this is not a school event, so transportation and supervision are up to the individual families who choose to get involved. Parents can have a great singing experience too!

Welcome to the Holy Cross Music room for 2017-18.

Over the past two summers, I have been immersing myself in the musical teaching approach founded by Zoltan Kodaly, who was this year recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for his contribution to our Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The music classroom at Holy Cross is inspired both by his work - centered around the human voice and the roots of our musical heritage in folk music - and Maria Montessori's work, which proposes the creation of an environment which draws out the "inner teacher" in each child, inviting discoveries based on their own needs and timing. From grades 1-5, most classes have a longer music time once a cycle for doing independent work, as well as a shorter one which is more teacher-directed. It is delightful to witness the enthusiasm with which they pursue their goals! The music room also includes a few spiritual works in the Montessori tradition, from the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which form part of the independent work time.

"There is no complete spiritual life without music, for the human soul has regions which can only be illuminated by music."
