On Thursday, Nov 6th our fantastic RRLA Guitar Club and 15 4th and 5th grade singers performed at the Elementary Music festival. We contributed two songs and got the chance to play on a big and beautiful stage at Rainey McCuller's School of the Arts along with many other elementary schools.
Our Roadrunners were the only school who included guitar, and they did wonderfully! Everyone I spoke to was very happy with our performance and I am especially proud how well they behaved and focused! Everyone did their best the kids looked very professional walking on and off stage, bowing, and transitioning back to their seats.
They acted like true leaders and I am very proud of them!

Now we get some time off for Christmas and then we will hopefully be back on stage in Spring.
Happy holidays.

Last week was a very successful week for our music Roadrunners. We had our school-wide Holiday Extravaganza where all grade levels were involved. Our cute Kindergartener's were singing Rudolph, 1st and 2nd graders sang and danced in two songs. Our 3rd graders were playing Guitar, and 4th and 5th graders sang a Christmas medley.
We further got a chance to hear the violin club, the guitar club, and a canon with guitars and singers.
The kids did do very well and had a lot of fun! A big thank you to Christ Community Church who let us use their facility.

It was a cloudy and rainy day yesterday during our meeting with the guitar club. Nevertheless, we had a lot of fun and worked hard on our new song "rain". We imitated rain songs using body percussion on the guitar.

This week our second graders were working on the traditional folk song simple gifts. The song is about the goal to live a simple life. Around 200 years ago, the Shakers believed that a simple life is the only way to reach happiness and freedom. I asked our Roadrunners how they would feel without having a TV, video games, or many toys... they were surely NOT happy about the idea. ;) Still, this song was a great way to connect music to our culture and history and to think about concepts which were not musical but still of great value for understanding the song.

This week we were exploring the instruments of the orchestra. Students listened to different instruments and identified them by their name, sound, and appearance. We further listened to the musical story "Peter and the Wolf" written by S. Prokofiev. In this story the characters are represented by different instruments of the orchestra.
