Homework due Mon. and Tues. 2/7, 2/8: page 618, Define  foreign words

Analyze 2 commercials from super bowl. Include the following:

·       Who is the target audience

·       Describe each commercial, characters, props, location, etc

·       Identify the rhetorical devices used in the commercial

·       Explain and show examples of the persuasive techniques used

Class work    Friday, 2/4 and Monday, 2/7

Read Biography of Rosa Parks, pg. 276

Read Rosa Parks poem, pg. 280

Answer 4 questions in Think column:

·       How was Rosa Parks able to be so influential?

·       Describe her appearance and demeanor (behavior).

·       Talk about her values.

·       What techniques does each of the authors use to characterize Rosa Parks?

Share your information with a small group. Write anything new in the Pair column.

Make a chart on the back (pg. 281) comparing the two pieces of lit. 

Answer the question on page 280: Which images portray Rosa Parks as a modest unextravagant person? Which portray her as strong and serious?

Complete the Vocabulary pg. 282 with the group. To answer these questions you will need to find the origins of the words. 

5th period Only: Read pages 292-294. Answer questions 1-11 and questions 1-7 on pg. 296.

 

 

 

In the Share Column, copy the generic outline from the board. This will be used to write your comparison/contrast essay.

Letter to parents about FCAT Focus: Get letter signed. Go online and do assessments that are open.

Count of Monte Cristo: Students should be up to chapter 50 by Tues. Feb. 15 and Wed. Feb. 16. You will have a quiz on some of the relevant things happening in the story.

Comparison/Contrast Essay: On Tues., 2/15 and Wed., 2/16, I will collect the Think, Pair, Share handout which includes the  4 questions about the bio and the paired information, the completed chart on 281, the voc. on 282, the answer to the question on 280, and the generic outline of the essay. (Don’t lose this paper, it’s worth a lot!)

Generic Outline: Option 1

I.                  Introduction (Paragraph 1)

A.   Title of biography and author

B.   Title of Poem and author (Remember to refer to the authors by last name only after the introduction.)

C.    Thesis Statement (Comparing and contrasting the two pieces of literature and how Rosa Parks is portrayed)

II.               Body

A.   Include all the information about the similarities along with important points of comparison. Use quotes and show support. (Paragraph 2)

B.   Include all the information about the differences in the two pieces of literature along with important points of comparison. Use quotes and show support. (Paragraph 3).

III.            Conclusion (Paragraph 4) Wrap up your essay, reiterating the various points of comparison. Don’t be repetitious.

C.    A third point of comparison, similarities and differences, including quotes and showing support. (Paragraph 4)

III.            Conclusion (Paragraph 5) Wrap up your essay, reiterating the various points of comparison. Don’t be repetitious.

Remember the following:

Use points 3,  4, and 5 from the chart for this paper.

Essay should be approximately 2 typewritten pages in length.  Use 1.5 spacing. Font should be 12. No bold text.

Use the transition words on the bottom of page 283.

Use a minimum of 2 quotes total.

Include three points of comparison.
