Good Evening Parents,

Sixth Grade Standards:

The student will discuss environmental issues in Europe.  Explain the major concerns of Europeans regarding the issues such as acid rain in Germany, air pollution in the United Kingdom, and the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

The student will describe the cultural characteristics of Europe. Describe the major religions in Europe; include Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Learning Target

I can explain the differences between an ethnic group and a religious group.

I can compare and contrast the major religion in Europe.

Sixth Grade Social Studies Syllabus

Text Book: People, Places and Change: An Introduction to World Studies.

Sixth grade studies study Latin America, Canada, Europe and Australia.  The goal is this two year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. The geography domain includes both physical and human geography. The government domain/civics domain focuses on selected types of government found in the various areas so as to help students begin to understand the variety of governments in the world.

Goals

Understand and use the Georgia Performance Standards in assignments and daily tasks.

Connect and relate to the following themes in 6th grade social studies.

Develop critical thinking skills.

Strengthen reading comprehension skills.

Interpret and analyze maps, graphs, and charts.

Pass the Georgia Milestones Assessment System

Develop and enjoyment of social studies

 

Eighth Grade Standard

The student will analyze the colonial period of Georgia's history.

Essential Questions

Why was the Georgia Colony founded?

What role did James Oglethrope play in the founding of Georgia?

Why was Mary Musgrove and Tomochichi significant in the settlement of Georgia?

Eighth Grade Syllabus

Textbook: Georgia and the American Experience

Description: Eighth students trace the history of Georgia in the context of the development of the United States.  This history is combined with a geographical study of Georgia and an overview of state government.  Students are expected to learn facts about important people, places, and events in Georgia and the nation.

Objectives:

Describe Georgia with regard to physical features and location.

Evaluate the development of Native American cultures and the impact of European exploration and settlement on the Native American cultures in Georgia.

Analyze the colonial period of Georgia's history as well as its role in the American Revolution.

Analyze the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Georgia.

Describe how World War I and World War II impacted Georgia.

Evaluate the role in Georgia in the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Explain the important of significant social, economic, and political developments in Georgia since 1970.
