Hi Parents/Guardians,

It's hard to believe 2016 is over and we are in 2017.  We have been very busy these past 4 weeks in our classroom working on "Buildings". The children have created a scenic view/skyline of their neighborhood using the boxes you brought into school.  They have also made houses using pop-cycle sticks and counted how many sticks they used to make their house.  Another type of building we created was a skyscraper using their hand prints as windows and counted the number of stories in the building, which we now call "a hand scraper".

We have read a number of different books on this subject but the main book the children love is "The Three Little Pigs" by Bonnie Dobkin.  They like it so much we made three houses using large boxes:  One to represent the straw house (real straws the children cut into small pieces), one to represent the stick house (which we had from our class trip to the park), and one brick house they decided to paint red and use red tape and grey tape as mortar.  This week, we will act out the story of the pigs and the children will play different characters from the book.   You can ask your children :  Who are the main characters?  What are their personalities?  Which house is the weakest/strongest.  We will be finishing the "Buildings" theme this week and starting a new one for next week.

Calendar Info:

On Friday, January 13th we have a regular dismissal of 2:35pm.  If you would like to pick-up your child at noon (12:00) when K-8 is being dismissed please just let me know so I can have them ready for you at that time.  There is after school starting at 2:35pm.  Also, no school on Monday, January 16th because it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
