The Science Summer Packet will be uploaded to student's Google Classrooms on July 6, 2020. It contains many helpful resources for students to begin their science fair projects, practice subject specific vocabulary, and a wealth of science enrichment activities.

On the first day of school, students need to have their Selfie Kahoot! and science project proposal sheet completed and turned in on Google Classroom. The Science project proposal will be given a grade and approved or denied for continuation. Projects will be denied if they are not grade appropriate or if they are demonstrations.  Additionally, students should come prepared with their science class materials.

Parents are also expected to send their summer homework to school, via their student, on the first day. All other assignments will be used to establish relationships and serve as get-to-know-you activities during the first week.

-Advise-A-Student request for advisor p.89 They will assign someone you can talk with regularly about your project.

*Both Experimental and Design projects need Abstract and safety Sheet attached to the front of the display board (the documents may be reduced size; see handbook)

*Projects requiring an endorsement will need to display the official stamped approved returned endorsement request on the front of the board also. (the document may be reduced size; see handbook)

*All cited research utilized to write the paper should be copyrighted between 2012 and 2019. Resources dated prior are too old to be considered reliable and/or valid.

*12 references are need for all project options. The Reference list or Works Cited list should be APA style in ABC order and double spaced between references. Individual references that take up more than one line should be indented starting with the second line and each subsequent line.

Aaaahhhh!!

Feeling anxious about science fair? Here are a few "okay" videos that can help:

How to Create Science Projects

Presentation Board Set up

https://youtu.be/-EJUAb6GdPw

*Caution- not all project examples shown in the video are experimental investigations with a control group. Show and tell demonstrations such as a volcano are not allowed. Design projects must solve a real-world engineering problem. It is bad science to allow the investigator or researcher be a test subject in the experiment. Your sample size should include at least 10 or more subjects of the same age and perhaps gender, unless you are testing differences in gender. Additionally, if a project involves the use of humans, vertebrates, microorganisms (approved cultures only), recombinant DNA, vertebrate tissue or firearms, students must complete the appropriate request for endorsement before engaging in experimentation. (obtain endorsements on http://cpsscifair.org/ ). Once approval has been granted from the Scientific Review Committee students would be allowed to begin experimentation.

NOTE: For projects conducted in a university, hospital or research laboratory under the supervision of a Doctor, Professor or Scientist, endorsement(s) and supporting documents are due October 25, 2019.  All other endorsements must be submitted in duplicate by November 22, 2019.

Endorsement requests MUST be made PRIOR to experimentation in order to ensure the safety of the test subject(s) and/or the scientist (may be submitted electronically via http://cpsscifair.org). The project plans are reviewed by the Scientific Review Committee and, if safe, the endorsement is granted, and the experiment may be carried out.  Permission to carry out an experiment CANNOT be given to one that has already been completed (experiments acquired online or same experiment you  conducted in a previous year).

STEM FAIR (Science Fair) Information:

I will post periodic reminders and helpful resources (in lieu of a typed packet or ditto sheets) to Class Dojo and new.schoolnotes.com/amingram.

Seventh and eighth grade students have a choice of engaging in independent experimentation, engineering design, or writing an APA cited scientific research essay paper titled, "Revolutionizing Science".

Once school is back in session, I will create an assignment for students to submit their research documents and/or the scientific essay on Google Classroom (due Dec.2).

Students desiring to enter the school fair will need to provide me with 3 printed copies of their paper, also.

Helpful resources:
http://cpsscifair.org/ (2020 Science Fair Handbook) browse student and parent areas at the bottom of the Home screen.
http://www.citationmachine.net/style (APA style Citation Formatting website)
https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/ (graph creation if unfamiliar with other platforms)
http://ecuip.lib.uchicago.edu/sciencefair/html/wizard/index.html (Science Fair Wizard for experimentation projects. Excellent Resource and suggested timeline!)

Please Note:

*Engaging in experimentation or a design project does not exempt a student from library research and writing an APA cited research paper that includes their experimentation results or design process in addition to presenting to the class or at the fair.

*Students choosing to write the Scientific essay are not required to conduct experimentation or present to the class but may enter their essay for submission to the Essay portion of the school fair and on to the state fair.

* It takes approximately 2½ to 3 months to complete a quality STEM Fair project! Be proactive, do not procrastinate, and set deadlines. Begin with the end in mind: Dec. 2- Final Project Due at School Dec. 12- MLA’s STEM FAIR

*Only students choosing to conduct Experimentation or Engineering Design projects will need a tri-fold project display board.

*I will offer in-person, during and after school, mentor sessions for students that need advisement on their projects. (TBA)

Homework for Oct. 17 until…

The next science current event was loaded to Google classroom. You can access a copy of the guidelines under the files tab after clicking view for your child’s respective grade’s webpage on my schoolnotes class website. The assignment is due Oct. 25 and should be submitted on Google classroom for grading. This assignment should have hit students’ CPS inbox on Oct. 16 prior to being dismissed from school. In class, this announcement was made verbally along with using this time to begin their independent STEM Fair (Science Fair) projects
