Happy Monday, Parents and Students!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

This week we will do an in-depth study of the causes of the American Civil War. This week's key vocabulary will include:

Sectionalism
Nullification
States' rights
Slavery
Missouri Compromise
Compromise of 1850
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Election of 1860

Students will have a short quiz over these words on Wednesday. Students who do not perform well on the quiz will be asked to stay after school for tutoring when we return to school from Thanksgiving Break and will be given a chance to re-take the quiz during that time.

Homework will be given this week and I will send a reminder each day via Class Messenger. Progress Reports will go home this week.

Have a great week!

Weekly Update 11/7

Happy Monday, everyone!

This week we are completing a CISM (Comprehension Instructional Sequence Module) lesson that introduces the Civil War by using close reading and vocabulary strategies. Ask your students to tell you major events that happened before, during and after the American Civil War.

There will be a vocabulary quiz on Wednesday over the key vocabulary words from the article.

Please take a moment this week and sign up for Class Messenger. Your students will be bringing home a flyer with information on how to sign up. I will be using the app for communication along with School Notes.

Students will also be bringing home information about the Social Studies fair. Please look over and sign the information and return it to school.

Homework this week:

Monday: Have parents sign the invitation for Class Messenger and sign up. Students who sign up receive 5 bonus points on their next test. The classes with 95% of parents signed up will receive brownies or cupcakes.

Tuesday: Complete practice session on www.quizlet.com---students should have an account already. This will prepare you for your vocabulary quiz on Wednesday.

Wednesday: Word Wall Wednesday--students will complete a word wall assignment on one of the key words from this article.

Thursday--deadline for extra credit (signing up for class messenger!)

I hope you all have a wonderful week! As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have.

We are off to a great start of the second nine weeks in Georgia Studies! We are finishing up our study of the early days of the United States and founding documents like the US Constitution and the GA Constitution of 1777. Students will get a chance to lead class this week as they are partnered up to conduct research, plan a presentation and will present a small topic to the class on Monday. I will attach a copy of this assignment and the grading rubric  here for parents to view. Please ask your student about their project and encourage them to continue working on Quizlet.com to review and preview vocabulary that is essential to their understanding of Georgia Studies.

This week we are studying Georgia's role in the American Revolution. Students are learning about the events that led up to the American Revolution and the people of Georgia who played a key role in the major battles of the war. Students will complete a task performance project on Wednesday and Thursday of this week to demonstrate their knowledge.

Additionally, we will go back to the computer lab for more time with the Achieve 3000 Literacy Program. Students are reading Social Studies articles and practicing their reading skills. Students may practice at home as well!

Please continue to encourage your child to use Quizlet as a study tool. Also, please remember that I am available on Fridays after school to assist students with their Interactive Notebooks, assignments or make up work. Please contact me if you are interested in your student staying after school.
