Parents and students:

This week, we will begin studying verbs. I have several fun activities planned as well as exercises to complete from the Holt Handbook. We also have a vocabulary quiz on Friday. Students should have flash cards completed in class to study from, as well as a list of words/definitions that they have copied to notebook paper. Please contact me with any questions.

Students also have checked out books from the library. We will be working on a project to do with the books beginning next week. Also, please read with your students at night or encourage them to read for AT LEAST 20 minutes from their novels. The more they read, the more proficient their reading skills will become!

Parents and students:

Due to ITBS testing, student schedules have temporarily changed. Due to this change, I will not see certain class periods on different days (for example, on Wednesday, I will only see 2nd, 4th, and 6th!) Therefore, assignments may differ per class until we are back on our regular schedule, as I am trying to keep all classes "on the same page." By the end of this week, students in all classes should have finished reading The Flood, a short story found on page 264 in our Elements of Literature book, and should have completed a "How-To" exercise that gives step-by-step instructions for brushing teeth.

Since I won't be seeing some classes everyday, the number of DO NOWs turned-in at the end of the week will vary by class. Be ensured that I am doing my best to keep all of the classes on the same material. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns.

PARENTS:

I apologize for the occasional delay in posting assignments. I try to update my page everyday; unfortunately, the website occasionally experiences technical difficulties and/or I may have trouble updating the site due to my own computer issues. Although the School Notes page is an excellent tool, it is imperative that students write their daily assignments in their agenda book. I would be happy to initial any student's agenda book each day next to his or her written homework assignment. This is a useful technique teachers and parents utilize to ensure that the students are recording their homework assignments.

First, a thank you to the concerned parent who emailed me about the project!

I am postponing the due date of the Narrative Writing Project until Sept. 30!!!! I will also make this announcement in class tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 20). I feel that more class time is needed to ensure that the students have a firm grasp on my expectations. In the meantime, I will be writing an essay in class with the students on Monday.

Some other notes...
Examples of a narrative essay can be found on page 89 and page 658 in Elements of Literature. There are also some writing tips in these pages. I gave the students a graphic organizer, in class, to use as a tool to help them write their story. I will be giving the students paper to use for the comic, which will be based on the essay. The poem will also be based on the essay. Student who type their paper will receive extra credit!
