Here are some trivia facts about West Virginia to study for the Golden Horseshoe:

Terms
1. Droop Mt. Battlefield- first state park in WV Pocahontas County.
2. Kumbrabow State Forest- Named for Kump (governor) Brady and Bowers this is the most remote state forest in WV.
3. Cathedral State Park is a small stand of virgin spruce trees in Preston County.
4. North Bend Rail Trail- Runs from North Bend State park to Clarksburg along an abandoned Rail line.
5. Greenbrier Rail trail- Runs from Greenbrier county to Cass Scenic Railroad along an abandoned rail line.
6. The High-Tech Corridor- Runs along I-79 from Weston-Clarksburg-Fairmont to Morgantown (map page 345)
7. FBI Finger Print Center- Located at Clarksburg very high tech. They store all the fingerprints for the whole country. The agency was brought here by Senator Byrd.

8.  NASA- Located at Fairmont, anything launced into space can be tracked from Fairmont.

9. Sugar Grove- The Navy information center established in 1955 in Pendleton County it gathers information.

10. The state seal of West Virginia has a miner and farmer on the front representing the two industries.  The ring of laual leaves represents our state flower.  The rock with the date June 20, 1863 represents the date of WV statehood and that it is carved in stone....very final.  The crossed rifles show that our independence from VA was  fought for and the liberty cap in the middle is a nod to the designer of the state seal Joseph H. DissDebarr who immigrated from Switzerland.  The Swiss army wore those caps when they fought for thier independence.

11.  How is WV different from Va geographically?  A-no ocean B-land is more mountainous C-Climate is different due to the mountains  D- growing seasons are different,

12. Humid Continental- The type of climate that WV has.  No ocean influence,  Hot humid summers and cold winters.

13. Cranberry Glades- A unique bog (swamp like area) that host a variety of plants that are found no place else this far south.  They are more typically found in the artic areas.  They were likely pushed there during the ice age.

14.  The Great Kanawha River-  Flows into the Ohio at Point Pleasant, it also runs past the state capitol and eventually turns into the New River which is probably the second oldest  river in the world.   The New River, and the New River Bridge is a National Park area.  The bridge cut the trip from 45 min. down the mountain and back up down to 7 seconds.  The bridge was completed and opened in 1977 it is the longest/ higest. single arch steel suspension bridge. 

15 Wheeling Bridge-  Built across the Ohio river it was designed by Elliot Roebling and was part of the national road.

1. Cornstalk- Shawnee Chief, Battle of Point Pleasant (Lord Dunmore’s War) he signed the Treaty of Camp Charlotte.
2. John Henry- The steel driving man he raced a steam engine at Great Ben Tunnel on the C& O Railroad in Summers County.
3. Pearl S. Buck- Born in Hillsboro, in Pocahontas county She won a Nobel Prize in 1938 and a Pulitzer Prize 1932 and The Howell’s Medal in 1935. Most Famous book The Good Earth.
4. Mary Lou Retton- 1984 Summer Olympics she won 6 gold medals. She grew up in Fairmont, WV Gyminist
5. Jerry West- From Chelyan in Kanawha County, played for WVU and professionally with the LA Lakers the NBA symbol is of Jerry West.
6. Gabriel Arthur- First person to see the Great Kanawha river.
7. John Peter Salley (or Salling) first to discover coal in WV
8. Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle- claimed the Ohio valley for France.
9. Alexander Spotswood- Governor of Va explored present day WV and awarded his companions with a golden horseshoe.
10. Morgan Morgan- given credit for being the first European settler in WV.
11. Elisha Brooks-Built First salt producing works at malden 1797
12. Peter Tarr Built first iron furnace west ow the Alleghenies at King’s Creee in Hancock County
13. Israel Cl White- WV State Geoglogist he could predict where oil and gas would be found he also worked for P A and the US government
14. Michael Owens- Invented a glass-bottle blowing machine (Mason County native)
15. William J. Blenko- Established Blenko Glass in Milton Famouse for Red Glass and Stained glass windows
16. Robert C. Byrd- Was WB longest Serving senator
17. John D. Rockefeller IV- On of WV current senators. He first came to WV as VISTA worker in the 1960’s He has served the state as Governor and as President of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon.
18. Joe Manchin- Current Senator from WV He grew up in Marion County. He held the office of Secretary of State and Governor before moving to the Senate position created when Byrd passed away.
19. Shelly Moore Capito- Us House of Rep. her area is the middle part of the state.
20. Nick Jo Rahall- US House of Rep. His area is the Southern part of the state and now Mason County
21. David MdKinley- US House of Representatives his area is the Northern part of the state.
22. Booker T. Washington- Born at Malden and He founded Tuskegee Institute.
23. Alexander Campbell- Established Bethany College the oldest and most expensive college in the state.
24. Alexander Wade- created the graded school system.
25. Leon Sullivan (p.428) Board of Directors for General Motors he fought Apartheid in S. Africa.
26. Charles Yeager- first to fly faster than the speed of sound from Hamlin in Lincoln county (part of the early space race)
27. Anna Jarvis- From Webster in Taylor county first to promote Mother’s Day where the first service was held at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton WV.
28. Homer Hickam- (p422) Wrote Rocket Boys Born in Big Creek in McDowell County.
29. Elizabeth Simpson Drewery- First African American woman to serve in the WV Legislature
30. Martin R. Delaney- Highest ranking African American officer in the Civil War.
31. Carter G. Woodson – called the Father of Black History month (February) Graduated from Douglass High school in Huntington which was a segregated high school
32. John Brown- Led the ill fated raid on Harper’s Ferry to get weapons from the Federal Arsenal. He was captured by Robert E. Lee who was a Lt. in the Union army at the time. (he will go on to lead the Confederate Army later) He was tried for Treason and hanged in Charles Town. Stonewall Jackson brought his class he was teaching at VMI along to watch the hanging. (Jackson will later be an important Civil War General)
33. Abraham Lincoln- Signed the statehood bill making WV a state
34. Francis Pierpont-From Marion County. Chosen as the governor of the “restored” state of Va. To create a new state a state must get permission from the old state. VA had succeeded so we “re-stored the VA government” so there was actually two Virginia’s for a while.
35. Waitman T. Willey- Submitted WV’s application for Statehood to the US Senate May 29 1862
36. Arthur I. Boreman- First Governor of WV
37. Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson- born in Lewis county he grew up around Amstead in Fayette County. Went to West Point. He was considered Lee’s Right hand man. He got his name at the First Battle of Manassas where Gen Bernard Bee said “There stands Jackson like a Stonewall” He was really quirkly sucked lemons, prayed with his eyes open, rode around with his arm in the air to keep the blood balanced. Last Words: “Let us cross over the river together and rest in the shade of the trees”
38. Mary Harris “Mother” Jones- Helped unionize the miners.
39. Vasquez Family (Picture on page 393) immigrants from Spain came to work in the Zinc Factory in Spelter. (gold)
40. Henry Louis Gates Jr. –Born in Piedmont in Mineral County. He first went to Potomac State where a professor said he should apply to Ivy league schools. He transferred to Yale and graduated from there then went on study at Cambridge University in England. He is a professor at Harvard. He might be most noted for being arrested for breaking in to a house. Turned out it was his house and he locked himself out and was trying to get in . But because he was black they thought he was a criminal Long story short he got to go drink beer at the white house with Obama.

43. Don Knotts- Actor best known for character Barney on the Andy Griffith show.
