1. Droop Mt. Battlefield- first state park in WV Pocahontas County.
2. Kumbrabow State Forest- Named for Kump (governor) Brady and Bowers this is the most remote state forest in WV.
3. Cathedral State Park is a small stand of virgin spruce trees in Preston County.
4. North Bend Rail Trail- Runs from North Bend State park to Clarksburg along an abandoned Rail line.
5. Greenbrier Rail trail- Runs from Greenbrier county to Cass Scenic Railroad along an abandoned rail line.
6. The High-Tech Corridor- Runs along I-79 from Weston-Clarksburg-Fairmont to Morgantown (map page 345)
7. FBI Finger Print Center- Located at Clarksburg very high tech. They store all the fingerprints for the whole country. The agency was brought here by Senator Byrd.

2. John Henry- The steel driving man he raced a steam engine at Great Ben Tunnel on the C& O Railroad in Summers County.
3. Pearl S. Buck- Born in Hillsboro, in Pocahontas county She won a Nobel Prize in 1938 and a Pulitzer Prize 1932 and The Howell’s Medal in 1935. Most Famous book The Good Earth.
4. Mary Lou Retton- 1984 Summer Olympics she won 6 gold medals. She grew up in Fairmont, WV Gyminist
5. Jerry West- From Chelyan in Kanawha County, played for WVU and professionally with the LA Lakers the NBA symbol is of Jerry West.
6. Gabriel Arthur- First person to see the Great Kanawha river.
7. John Peter Salley (or Salling) first to discover coal in WV
8. Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle- claimed the Ohio valley for France.
9. Alexander Spotswood- Governor of Va explored present day WV and awarded his companions with a golden horseshoe.
10. Morgan Morgan- given credit for being the first European settler in WV.

12. Peter Tarr Built first iron furnace west of the Alleghenies at King’s Creek in Hancock County

17. Robert C. Byrd- Was WB longest Serving senator
18. John D. Rockefeller IV- Recently retired WV senator. He first came to WV as VISTA worker in the 1960’s He has served the state as Governor and as President of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon.
19. Joe Manchin- Current Senator from WV He grew up in Marion County. He held the office of Secretary of State and Governor before moving to the Senate position created when Byrd passed away.
20. Shelly Moore Capito- Former Us House of Rep. her area was the middle part of the state. She was sworn in as US Senator in January
21. Nick Jo Rahall- Former US House of Rep. His area is the Southern part of the state and now Mason County. He was voted out of office and replaced by Republican
22. David MdKinley- US House of Representatives his area is the Northern part of the state.
23. Booker T. Washington- Born at Malden and He founded Tuskegee Institute.
24. Alexander Campbell- Established Bethany College the oldest and most expensive college in the state.
25. Alexander Wade- created the graded school system.
26. Leon Sullivan (p.428) Board of Directors for General Motors he fought Apartheid in S. Africa.
27. Charles Yeager- first to fly faster than the speed of sound from Hamlin in Lincoln county (part of the early space race)
28. Anna Jarvis- From Webster in Taylor county first to promote Mother’s Day where the first service was held at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton WV.
29. Homer Hickam- (p422) Wrote Rocket Boys Born in Big Creek in McDowell County. The movie was called October Skies
30. Elizabeth Simpson Drewery- First African American woman to serve in the WV Legislature
31. Martin R. Delaney- Highest ranking African American officer in the Civil War.
32. Carter G. Woodson – called the Father of Black History month (February) Graduated from Douglass High school in Huntington which was a segregated high school
33. John Brown- Led the ill fated raid on Harper’s Ferry to get weapons from the Federal Arsenal. He was captured by Robert E. Lee who was a Lt. in the Union army at the time. (he will go on to lead the Confederate Army later) He was tried for Treason and hanged in Charles Town. Stonewall Jackson brought his class he was teaching at VMI along to watch the hanging. (Jackson will later be an important Civil War General)
34. Abraham Lincoln- Signed the statehood bill making WV a state
35. Francis Pierpont-From Marion County. Chosen as the governor of the “restored” state of Va. To create a new state a state must get permission from the old state. VA had succeeded so we “re-stored the VA government” so there was actually two Virginia’s for a while.
36. Waitman T. Willey- Submitted WV’s application for Statehood to the US Senate May 29 1862
37. Arthur I. Boreman- First Governor of WV
38. Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson- born in Lewis county he grew up around Amstead in Fayette County. Went to West Point. He was considered Lee’s Right hand man. He got his name at the First Battle of Manassas where Gen Bernard Bee said “There stands Jackson like a Stonewall” He was really quirkly sucked lemons, prayed with his eyes open, rode around with his arm in the air to keep the blood balanced. Last Words: “Let us cross over the river together and rest in the shade of the trees”
39. Mary Harris “Mother” Jones- Helped unionize the miners.
40. Vasquez Family (Picture on page 393 old book) immigrants from Spain came to work in the Zinc Factory in Spelter. (gold)
41. Henry Louis Gates Jr. –Born in Piedmont in Mineral County. He first went to Potomac State where a professor said he should apply to Ivy league schools. He transferred to Yale and graduated from there then went on study at Cambridge University in England. He is a professor at Harvard. He might be most noted for being arrested for breaking in to a house. Turned out it was his house and he locked himself out and was trying to get in . But because he was black they thought he was a criminal Long story short he got to go drink beer at the white house with Obama. Yea. Right

43. Wood Williams- WV only Medal of Honor recipient.
44. Don Knotts- Actor best known for character Barney on the Andy Griffith show.
45. Cyrus R Vance- Secretary of state under Jimmy Carter. One of the most important diplomatic positions
46. Julia Davis Adams, a writer, died Saturday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W. Va. She lived in Charles Town, W. Va., and was 92. Mrs. Adams, who was born in Clarksburg, W. Va., attended Wellesley College and graduated from Barnard College in 1922. She was the author of two dozen books, mostly novels. Writing as Julia Davis, she often dealt with the history of her native state and the role her family had played in it. Her play, "The Anvil," was a re-creation of the trial of John Brown. Written as Charles Town's contribution to the Civil War centennial, it was an off-Broadway production in 1962.

49. Minnie Buckingham-Harper- first African Am. Woman appointed to legislature, she was not elected but filled out her late husband’s term of office.
50. J.R. Clifford- born near Moorefield in 1848, he became WV’s first African American Lawyer he fought for the Union and attended Storer College in Harper’s Ferry. It was an all-black college and no longer in existance.
51. Denise Gardinia-Author most known for her book Storming Heaven she ran for Governor of WV on the campaign of ending Mountain Top Removal
52. Chuck Yeager- first to fly faster than the speed of sound, the early space race.
53. Robert E. Lee- Col. In the American Army that captured John Brown, he later went on to lead the Confederate Army. He bought his trusted horse “Traveler” from a farm in Fayette County. His plantation was just outside of Washington DC and became Arlington National Cemetary
54. Ted Cassidy- Born in Philippi, he played the role of Lurch in the television series The Adams Family.
55. General John McCausland- Plantation located in Mason County on RT 35
56. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson- General in the Confederate Army. Lee considered him his right hand man.
57. Joseph H. DisDebar- designed the WV state seal. He was the commissioner of immigration he was from Switzerland.

59. Arch Moore- served two terms as governor, father of Shelly Moore-Capito
60. Don Knotts- actor best known for his role as Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith Show
61. Mary Lee Settle-writer known for Elderberry Flood Poetry
62. Lemuel Chenoworth- From Beverly he designed several covered bridges including the “double barrel” covered bridge in Philippi.
63. Cecil Underwood- He was both the youngest and oldest governor of WV.
64. Elizabeth Kee- from Bluefield she was the 1st woman elected to Congress in 1951
65. Ken Hechler- born in Roslyn, NY he wrote Bridge at Remagen and was Secretary of State for WV for many years.
66. Jared M. Arter- Jefferson County native, former slave and principal of the Hill Top School in Fayette County.
67. Private Thornsbury Bailey Brown- 1st soldier killed in the Civil War
68. Sarah Wells & Delilah Wells-Grier- The town of Sistersville is named for them
69. Eleanor Steber- Wheeling native she was an opera singer.
70. Phyllis Curtin- Clarksburg native she was an opera singer.
71. Cass Gilbert-he designed the state capitol building (“ol if it is the building, and “al” if it is the town) it is modeled after the nation’s capitol.
72. Bell Boyd- spy during the civil war
73. Louis McNeil- Wrote The Clearing poetry
74. Hal Greer- born in Huntington, 1936 he played basketball with the Philadelphia 76ers and was named MVP 1968
75. Henry Louis Gates- Born in 1950 in Piedmont in Mineral County he graduated from Harvard and was named one of the 25 most influential Americans by Time Magazine in 1997. He is a professor at Harvard.

Ecoomics Quiz # 4 Quiz for Thursday October 8, 2014
1. What building materials that trees from WV was used to produce? Railroad crossties, lumber for houses and flatboats, furniture, and material for building barrels.
2. What towns owe their growth to the timber industry? Cass, Elkins, Rainelle, Richwood.
3. Festivals.....Mountain State Forest Festival is held at Elkins,
Woodchopping Fesitval is held at Webster Springs.
4. West Virginia began to establish state forest in 1924
5. West Virginia began to replant trees after WWII. (Although the CCC did a lot of replanting during the great depression)
