Dear Students and Parents,

Last week, the focus of class was on economic vocabulary as a foundation for the rest of the unit. We continued to work on the rap and apply that knowledge to various vocabulary activities. My magnet class did presentations for the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE). I am in the running for this organization's teacher of the year award. I was so impressed with them! They were so well-prepared, well-spoken, well-dressed and well-mannered. Win or lose, I am extremely proud of these students!

This week, we are delving into the specifics of economics. We will focus on personal money management choices, economic systems and trade barriers. We will wrap up our week in the computer lab for Achieve 3000. I will be absent on Friday for a workshop at Columbus State University. Parents, please encourage your child to be on their very best behavior.

**Parents, I try to have quizzes weekly or bi-weekly to document students' mastery of the standards. Students are allowed to check out their interactive student notebooks (ISNs) with teacher permission to prepare for quizzes and in some instances are able to use their ISNs when taking a quiz. I also send out weekly or bi-weekly study sheets that require a parent signature to ensure that students are actually studying, I have review materials available under the 6th grade tab of my website, and I send out a reminder text message the week of the quiz.

This week in social studies:
Monday: Personal Money Management smart board presentation and activities

Tuesday: Finish up Monday's activities and move onto Types of Economic systems notes

Wednesday: Create an Economic Continuum

Thursday: Trade Barriers review + comic strip or skit presentation

Friday: Lab Day! Achieve 3000

Homework: Learn the "Imports and Exports" rap. *See 6th grade tab for video and lyrics* Please come to Saturday School from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m

Black History Month Project due 2/27/17. See your child's handout for additional information or visit the files section of my school notes page for the guidelines.

Dear Students and Parents,

Upon our return to school, we only had a 3-day instructional week. I reviewed rules, rituals and procedures then picked back up where we left off in our government unit. We continued to work on the government rap as well as learn about the national governments of Brazil, Mexico and Cuba. Lastly, students completed a study guide on QBA (Quarterly Benchmark Assessment) II over Latin America.

This week students will take Quarterly Benchmark Assessment (QBA) II and we will wrap up our government unit. Parents, this year I received approval to implement alternative curriculum pacing that differs from the district. As a result, we have not covered everything that will be on the QBA. Students will not be penalized for the questions with content we have not covered but are expected to know the content that we did. We did a study guide in class on Friday and students had an extended weekend to study. Best of luck!

This week in social studies:
Monday: No school

Tuesday:  QBA II

Wednesday: Government vocabulary--government rap, card match and vocabulary match review sheet

Thursday: Unit 4 Government assessment (open notebook)

Friday: Geography + Government review sheet (end of Unit 4)

Homework: USA test prep assignments, Achieve 3000 free choice articles, magnet ILT students begin 2nd semester service hours
