Dear Students and Parents,

Last week, students learned the geography of Australia and prepared for the Unit Test over ALL countries and ALL physical features we've learned about. Student completed a thorough study guide, participated in review games, and did review stations. I believe students are ready for the TEST!

**Parents, I try to have quizzes weekly or bi-weekly to document students' mastery of the standards. Students are allowed to check out their interactive student notebooks (ISNs) with teacher permission to prepare for quizzes and in some instances are able to use their ISNs when taking a quiz. I also send out weekly or bi-weekly study sheets that require a parent signature to ensure that students are actually studying, I have review materials available under the 6th grade tab of my website, and I send out a reminder text message the week of the quiz.

Our focus for this week is human-environmental interaction: how we impact the environment and how the environment affects us. This new unit delves into causes, effects and possible solutions to environmental issues in Europe, Latin America + Caribbean and Canada.

This week in social studies:
Monday: Unit 1 Assessment (post-poned from Friday)
Tuesday:  Intro to next unit, Human-environmental interaction
Wednesday:  Environmental issues of Europe Tri-fold notes
Thursday: Complete notes; write summary; begin choice activity
*Choice activity- environmental T-shirt design, double-bubble graphic organizer, or "Danger Sign"

Friday: ISN quiz; finish choice activity and glue in ISN

Homework: Visit the 6th grade tab for study help! Friday will be a routine 5-question multiple choice interactive student notebook (ISN) quiz check.

Dear Students and Parents,

Last week, students learned about physical features and population distribution of Canada. They also took a 5 question multiple-choice notebook quiz to check if students' notebooks were up-to-date.

Students are allowed to check out their interactive student notebooks (ISNs) with teacher permission to prepare for quizzes and in some instances are able to use their ISNs when taking a quiz. Our focus for this week is Australia's geography and population. We will only spend two days on this country because there are only four physical features that students must know. We will spend the remainder of the week preparing for our unit assessment over Europe, Latin America + the Caribbean, Canada and Australia.

This week in social studies:
Monday: Australia physical map
Tuesday:  Australia population distribution
Wednesday:  Unit 1 Study Guide
Thursday: Review Stations
Friday: Unit 1 Assessment

Homework: Prepare for the unit 1 assessment by completing the study guide, getting a parent signature, and utilizing the 6th grade tab on hey for study resources.

Dear Students and Parents,

Last week, students were assessed on Latin American & Caribbean geography and population distribution. I was VERY impressed with students' performance on the quiz. Students who did not do well received some additional map practice and those who made 100% proficiency were given an enrichment activity to supplement their knowledge of the Latin American region.

Our focus for this week is Canada's geography and population. We were unable to get to Canada last week due to pep rally practice and completion of our Achieve 3000 lesson. Achieve 3000 is a web-based program that has students read and write based on their individualized reading level. It is a school and district initiative to improve our student achievement.

This week in social studies:
Monday: Panama Canal documentary + RACE writing prompt (2nd period only)
Tuesday:  Introdcution to Canada + Canada map
Wednesday:  Canada population distribution analysis worksheet
Thursday: Begin "Pack My Bag" performance task
Friday: ISN quiz + Finish "Pack My Bag" performance task

Homework: If students do not finish the "Pack My Bag" performance task on Friday, they will need to complete it at home and turn in on Monday. Make sure all assignments are up-to-date in ISN for the notebook quiz on Friday.

Dear Students and Parents,

Last week, my student teacher Grace Hazlett had the opportunity to teach my students. She introduced Latin America and the Caribbean, taught students the geography and population distribution of the region and had students collaborate on a group poster for an assigned Latin American country. We did not have an opportunity to take our quiz because students did not finish the poster so the assessment has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 13 over Latin American & Caribbean geography and population distribution. The study guide was given out on Friday.

Our focus for this week is to finish Latin America and the Caribbean and move on to Canada's geography and population.

This week in social studies:
Monday: Finish group poster and present
Tuesday:  Review with map match cards + Quiz
Wednesday:  Introduction to Canada + Canada map
Thursday: Canada population distribution analysis worksheet
Friday: Finish population distribution analysis worksheet

Homework: Study map and population distribution of Latin America, prepare for quiz on Tuesday, get study sheet signed and turn in Tuesday, make sure all assignments are up-to-date in ISN

Dear Students and Parents,

Last week, students learned about population distribution (where people live and why). Students took notes, watched videos and complete an analysis worksheet in which they analyzed various maps of Europe to understand where populations tend to settle. Students were quizzed on their knowledge of population distribution in Europe as well as an ISN (interactive student notebook) check. Students were allowed to use their notebook for the quizzes.

Our focus for this week is a new region--Latin America and the Caribbean. Students will learn a new set of countries and physical features and apply what they learned about population distribution in Europe to Latin America.

This week in social studies:
Monday: LABOR DAY
Tuesday:  Political and physical maps of Latin America
Wednesday:  Population distribution graphic organizer
Thursday: Guided notes + video clips
Friday: Review, quiz + ISN check

Homework: Study map and population distribution of Latin America, prepare for quiz on Friday, get study sheet signed and turn in Friday, make sure all assignments are up-to-date in ISN

**Select classes will have additional research to do on an assigned country. The research can be done on a computer, tablet or smart phone**
