Dear Students and Parents,

This week we conclude our history unit. My classes will still be held in the media center so the 8th graders can use our wing for remediation.

We do not have a 6th grade social studies GMAS this year but we do have a SGM, or student growth measure. Students took a pre-test earlier in August and will take that same test on May 12 to measure how much students have learned in social studies this year under my instruction.

This week's lesson plans:

Monday: Canada History Cornell notes + video clips

Tuesday: Cuban Revolution notes + video clips

Wednesday: Zapatistas Cornell notes + documentary

Thursday: Historical figures cut & paste matching activity

Friday: 6th grade field trip!

HOMEWORK: SGM Prep Questions due FRIDAY

Dear Students and Parents,

We are finally back to regular classes this week with a few minor changes. The classes on the 6th grade hallway have been swapped with 8th grade so that they can use our wing for remediation. My class has been relocated to the media center.

We do not have a 6th grade social studies GMAS this year but we do have a SGM, or student growth measure. Students took a pre-test earlier in August and will take that same test on May 12 to measure how much students have learned in social studies this year under my instruction.

This week we will pick back up with our history unit.

This week's lesson plans:

Monday: Conquistadors notes and video clips

Tuesday: Choice activity (1) Aztec treasure map or (2) Conquistador story boxes

Wednesday: Australian history notes and video clips + Aboriginal perspective writing

Thursday: Latin American independence springy foldable + video clips

Friday: Canada history and culture Cornell notes + video

HOMEWORK: SGM Prep Questions due FRIDAY

Dear Students and Parents,

We continue with GMAS testing this week. I have selected as a test examiner so I will have little to no contact with my students for the next couple of weeks. I have created review materials for other teachers to go over with my students so they need to be responsible for keeping the content fresh in their minds. There is also USA test prep, Canvas and Quizlet for additional practice at home.

Dear Students and Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break! Now, it's back to work and time to prepare for the Georgia Milestones Assessment System.

This week, students will learn more about European history, including exploration, colonization and exchanges of foods, animals, diseases, technology and culture between the "Old World" (Europe, Africa and Asia) and the "New World" (the Americas).

If you did not see Fort's huge student growth on the GMAS from last year published in the paper, please click the link below. I am proud of the social studies department that came in second place with 76% growth in social studies :)

**Parents, I try to have quizzes weekly or bi-weekly to document students' mastery of the standards. Students are allowed to check out their interactive student notebooks (ISNs) with teacher permission to prepare for quizzes and in some instances are able to use their ISNs when taking a quiz. I also send out weekly or bi-weekly study sheets that require a parent signature to ensure that students are actually studying, I have review materials available under the 6th grade tab of my website, and I send out a reminder text message the week of the quiz.

This week in social studies:
Monday: World War I, World War II and the Cold War Timeline

Tuesday: European Exploration tri-fold

Wednesday: Tracing Empires 4-square
*Tutoring CANCELLED this week*

Thursday: Columbian Exchange notes, videos and simulation reenactment

Friday: Columbian Exchange menu activity

Homework: Learn the "World War I" rap. *See 6th grade tab for video and lyrics* Spring Break signature sheet due Friday (late grade).
